Company History
Over the course of SSM Health’s 144-year history, growth and transformation have been nearly constant. Our founding sisters, the Franciscan Sisters of Mary, first began caring for patients in converted homes, which were later replaced with hospitals to meet the needs of the community. They began their ministry in St. Louis and then expanded to reach cities across the Midwest where they recognized a need for health care. The sisters’ focus on being fully present to the needs in front of them is a commitment that lives on across SSM Health over a century later.
Today, the ministry of SSM Health is in the capable and compassionate hands of more than 35,000 employees, 9,500 physicians and 4,600 volunteers who also understand the power of presence. We receive countless letters from patients and families who are grateful for not only the care they received, but also for the individuals who took the time to listen, to understand, to answer their questions, to hold their hand, or even to pray. These are the moments when we reveal God’s healing presence in a powerful and enduring way.
